Get Involved: Volunteer Your Time and Talent

Volunteering is one of the most impactful ways to support nonprofit organizations and strengthen your community. Whether you’re passionate about education, the environment, human services, or the arts, there’s a nonprofit in our network that would greatly benefit from your time, skills, and enthusiasm. Here are some tips to help you get started on your volunteer journey:

1. Your Time Has Real Value

Volunteers are essential to nonprofit success, and the value of volunteer time is measurable. According to Independent Sector, the estimated value of a volunteer hour in the United States was $33.49 as of April 2024. When you give your time, you’re making a meaningful economic impact that strengthens organizations and helps them do more for their communities.

2. Explore Opportunities with Our Member Directory

Our Member Directory is a great starting point for finding a nonprofit that aligns with your interests and passions. You can:

  • Sort by cause area to narrow down organizations working on issues close to your heart.
  • Access a member's website to learn more about their mission, programs, and needs.

Once you’ve found an organization you’re interested in, reach out directly to learn how you can get involved. Many nonprofits have specific volunteer opportunities listed or can work with you to identify a role that matches your skills and availability.

3. Reach Out and Make Connections

Building a relationship with a nonprofit starts with a conversation. When you reach out:

  • Share why you’re interested in their work.
  • Ask about current or upcoming volunteer needs.
  • Be clear about the time, skills, and resources you can offer.

Nonprofits often have unique needs and might suggest opportunities you hadn’t considered.

4. Be Open to New Experiences

Volunteering is a great way to step outside your comfort zone, meet new people, and learn new skills. Whether you’re helping at an event, serving on a board, or assisting with day-to-day operations, your contributions make a difference.

5. Stay Committed

Nonprofits depend on volunteers, and consistency is key. If you commit to a role, ensure you can follow through. Reliable and passionate volunteers help organizations thrive and create a lasting impact.

6. Spread the Word

Already volunteering with a nonprofit? Share your experience with friends, family, and colleagues! Your story might inspire someone else to get involved.
